چکیده

We have developed a 101 year (1893-1994) subseasonal oxygen (•80) and carbon (•3C) isotopic time series from Clipperton Atoll in the eastern Pacific using the coral Porites lobata. In agreement with Linsley et al. [1999] we find that seasonal nd interannual coral •80 variability at Clipperton results from variability in both water temperature and salinity. Three new coral time series demonstrate the reproducibility of a secular coral õ•80 trend of-0.35%0 since 1910 but show varying •3C trends. Strong decadal-scale variability in the •80 record appears related to the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) through postulated changes in the strengths of the Equatorial Counter Current and North Equatorial Current. Interannual variability in this coral •80 record is directly related to the E1 Nifio Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and isolation of this frequency band indicates reduced ENSO variability in the eastern equatorial Pacific in the period 1925 to -1940, in agreement with instrumental and other Pacific coral records.

Tropical–North Pacific Climate Linkages over the Past Four Centuries*

Analyses of instrumental data demonstrate robust linkages between decadal-scale North Pacific and tropical Indo-Pacific climatic variability. These linkages encompass common regime shifts, including the noteworthy 1976 transition in Pacific climate. However, information on Pacific decadal variability and the tropical high-latitude climate connection is limited prior to the twentieth century. He...

Radiocarbon variability in the western equatorial Pacific inferred from a highresolution coral record from Nauru Island

We have generated a high resolution coral A14C record spanning the last 50 years to document the seasonal and interannual redistribution of surface waters in the western tropical Pacific. Prebomb (1947-1956) A14C values average -63%0 and have a total range of 30%0. Values begin to increase in 1957, reaching a maximum of 137%o in mid-1983. Large interannual variability of up to 80%0 closely foll...

Decadal-Scale SST and Salinity Variations in the Central Tropical Pacific: Signatures of Natural and Anthropogenic Climate Change

Accurate projections of future temperature and precipitation patterns in many regions of the world depend on quantifying anthropogenic signatures in tropical Pacific climate against its rich background of natural variability. However, the detection of anthropogenic signatures in the region is hampered by the lack of continuous, century-long instrumental climate records. This study presents cora...

Coral Luminescence Identifies the Pacific Decadal Oscillation as a Primary Driver of River Runoff Variability Impacting the Southern Great Barrier Reef

The Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) is a large-scale climatic phenomenon modulating ocean-atmosphere variability on decadal time scales. While precipitation and river flow variability in the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) catchments are sensitive to PDO phases, the extent to which the PDO influences coral reefs is poorly understood. Here, six Porites coral cores were used to produce a composite rec...

Recent variability in the southern oscillation: isotopic results from a tarawa atoll coral.

In the western tropical Pacific, the interannual migration of the Indonesian Low convective system causes changes in rainfall that dominate the regional signature of the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) system. A 96-year oxygen isotope record from a Tarawa Atoll coral (1 degrees N, 172 degrees E) reflects regional convective activity through rainfall-induced salinity changes. This monthly re...
